Understanding Epilepsy

image

Epilepsy is a common brain disorder that begins with neuron dysfunctions in the brain. Through these dysfunctions are specific reactions which result in changed patterns in the brain. From this, increased alterations in the brain functioning, as well as how it relates to other areas of the body begins to occur, specifically because of the communication that the brain sends to the neurons throughout the body.

Symptoms of Epilepsy

There are various reactions that happen through Epilepsy, all which show as strong indicators to this disease. This includes things such as:

  • strange sensations
  • heightened emotions
  • convulsions
  • muscle spasms
  • loss of consciousness
  • seizures

Causes of Epilepsy

When the brain functions, it is required to send signals to and from the brain through neuron activity. With Epilepsy, these become clogged through nerve cells that bunch into the neuron activity. This causes the signals that are supposed to move from the brain to the body to slow down in their function and to send signals that don't correspond with the correct activity from the brain to the nerves and through the cells.

Treatment For Epilepsy

If one thinks they have Epilepsy, or may have symptoms of Epilepsy, then it is essential to receive treatment as soon as possible. If you visit a physician, you will receive a diagnosis from an EEG. This is a brain scan that identifies whether there are any breaks or abnormal clogs in the nerve area. If so, then it is attributed to having Epilepsy.

While Epilepsy can not be completely cured, it can be monitored and controlled through medications that allow the brain to have some normal functioning. This provides individuals with the ability to control and monitor seizures as well as other difficulties that may be occurring. However, there may be some drastic results that occur because there is no definitive cure. Status epilepticus, where the state of Epilepsy becomes constant, or sudden death, are known to both affect those with Epilepsy.

Understanding the basics of Epilepsy can help you to control the problem through the nerve damage that may be occurring. By recognizing the symptoms, as well as the outcomes, you can easily begin to monitor and control states of Epilepsy so they don't become life threatening or damaging.
