Back pain is a much common problem among population and may appear as dull and constant ache to sudden and severe pain. The pain will be so sharp that leaves you disabled or arrested. The pain can be developed as a result of an accident, a fall or because of lifting something too heavy. It also develops very slowly and will be severe as age progresses. This type of pain will be associated with back muscle weakness and spinal column abrasions. It cannot be predicted and will be felt once the pain starts. As there are diverse reasons for back pain, almost all individuals may get affected once in the lifetime, mildly or severely.
Risk factors
The condition is so common that out of 10 individuals, 8 will be suffering of back pain. There are many risk factors associated with back pain. Those are:
- Body fitness: The chance of developing back is more in persons who are not physically fit. Muscles in back region is meant to support spinal cord during actions or activities involving back movement. Abdominal muscles also assist in movement. Many of people use to do intense physical activities during weekends, being idle on all other days. Such individuals are known as ‘weekend warriors’. They are more prone to have back injuries than those who carry out physical activities moderately in most of the days.
- Age: Usually back pain will be developed or aggravated during 30-40 years of age. It is a common illness with the age.
- Race: Clinical studies show that race is also a factor in back pain formation. The chance of developing spondylolisthesis (a condition due to slippage of lumbar vertebrae from position) is three to four times higher in African-American women than others.
- Hereditary factors: Back pain due to degenerative disc complaints are related to errors in genetic components.
- Other diseases: The presence of some other diseases can cause or elevate back pain. Those include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, certain types of cancers and ankylosing spondylitis.
- Smoking: This is also a risk factor to back pain. It affects in different ways-directly and indirectly. Cigarette smoking blocks the body’s ability to absorb nutrients from blood, elevates mental strain and can lead to many other diseases.
- Job related risks: If your job involves heavy weight lifting, pulling and pushing, it can lead to severe back injury.
