Osteoarthritis Diagnosis and Treatment

image

Osteoarthritis is type of illness commonly found in older people, especially above the age of 65. As the age progresses, the cartilaginous covering around the end region of bones will get degraded. This results in direct contact of bones and severe pain. There will be redness, hot or burning sensation, inflammation and pain in the joints.

Diagnosis of Osteoarthritis

There is no single test to diagnose arthritis. Usually, a combination of tests are preferred by doctors that help to rule out some other diseases and confirm the case of osteoarthritis.

Family history of disease: It is important to maintain a good relationship between doctor and patient. Doctor will ask about the onset of pain and symptoms. It is also important to know whether any other members of family have or had the condition and the relationship of patient with them. Certain types of osteoarthritis, like those affecting fingers, possess some genetic risk factors.

Physical examination: Doctor will examine the general health condition of patient giving special importance to muscle and reflex movements.

X-ray: This test helps in examining the condition of bones and cartilages in joint region. It will give a clear idea of bone damage, loss of cartilagenous tissue and bone spurs.

Other tests include blood test and joint aspiration. Both of theses will help to rule out chances of other diseases. During joint aspiration, fluid will be drawn from joints for testing. As the disease affects the older individuals, it is difficult to diagnose the disease with symptoms. The only way possible is to rule out other disease and to reach final to a final conclusion. Psychological abnormalities with anxiety and depression are also common among patients.

Treatment for Osteoarthritis

Method with more than one treatment is effective in controlling osteoarthritis. The basic goal in all types of treatment include

  • Reduction of pain in joints
  • Reducing the body weight and lowering BMI
  • Taking rest to improve joint health
  • To achieve a healthy life pattern

Exercise is meant to lower the body weight so that the effort and stress experienced by joints will get relieved. But it should be practiced after proper consultation. Taking rest is another treatment method. If the pain is due to strenuous muscular activities, rest can reduce pain.

Commonly used medicines for osteoarthritis include painkillers like paracetamol and medicines under NSAID. Pain relieving creams and sprays are also suggested in some cases.

Surgery is another treatment method, which removes broken and damaged pieces of bones. It is also done to resurface the bones and to reposition it.  Joint replacement surgeries are also done as part of treatment.
