Endocarditis and the Cardiovascular System

image

Even though the cardiovascular system is known to be closed off with the functions from the veins, arteries and valves only opening to allow blood and oxygen to flow through, there still may be other components that move into the blood stream and cause complications. A main problem that may occur is known as Endocarditis, which includes sets of bacteria that make their way into the blood stream and cause difficulties with the heart.

How Endocarditis Forms

If you have used needles, syringes or medical devices that break through skin and gums, then you want to make sure that you take extra caution so bacteria and other complications don't move into the blood stream. In the instance of Endocarditis, bacteria are able to get in through these sources. The result is that an infection begins to occur in the blood stream, specifically by moving up to the heart area. If you have an abnormal blood flow or other complication in the heart, then it is easier for this disease to move in the heart and cause difficulties.

Symptoms of Endocarditis

You will be able to notice that you have Endocarditis as an infection because your body begins responding by sweats, chills, fever, aches, weakness, fatigue, swelling and difficulty breathing. If you notice any of these symptoms, then it is important to visit a doctor to stop the infection that has occurred in your heart. Without doing so, the bacteria can continue to accumulate in the heart area and blood stream.

Treatment for Endocarditis

Because Endocarditis is based off a bacteria and infection, it can easily be treated. There are antibiotics which are designed to target bacteria and kill it, which stops further infection from occurring. The most common medication used is penicillin or gentamicin. Each of these is known to target any bacteria and free radicals that may cause complications in the body. If the problem persists after six weeks, then surgery is also an alternative to help clear the infection from the heart.

With these specifics based on heart problems, is the ability to help the heart to heal from the bacteria and infection that is in your body. Being cautious of needles or other external components that can move bacteria in your blood allows you to have a preventative measure against the bacteria. If syringes or needles have to be used, then sterilizing these can also help prevent the heart problem from occurring.
