Basics of High Blood Pressure

image

High blood pressure is a problem for 1 in 3 adults. The problems with this are directly linked to specific lifestyle habits, as well as health complications and diseases that occur. Understanding the basics of high blood pressure, why it occurs and what may happen without caring for the disease is the beginning to finding the correct treatment.

What is High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure occurs when the blood is moving at a faster then normal rate. The blood pressure is noted as the force of the blood that moves through your cardiovascular system, specifically through veins and arteries. If it is pumped out too quickly from the heart, then it causes extra pressure to form. When this happens, the blood pushes against the walls of the arteries causing for a specific speed of blood that is moving and which is linked to the pressure. The average should be between 120 / 80 to 140 / 90.

If your blood pressure moves past this normal rate, it is considered high blood pressure. However, this is categorized into several states. For instance, blood pressure is measured in two states, one which is systolic and the other which is diastolic. The top number is the systolic number and shows the top amount of pressure, while the lower number, which is diastolic, indicates the lowest rate of pressure your blood is moving at. Within these two rates, are regular blood pressure rates, hypertension and high blood pressure that is either in stage 1 or 2. The division between these are based on both numbers and how high they are, as well as how they relate to each other.

High Blood Pressure Treatment

The only way to know if your blood pressure is too high is to check with a doctor or physician to see what your average is. If the number is too high, then you want to reconsider your lifestyle, as this is the number one cause for high blood pressure. However, others who have heart disease or diabetes may also have the same problem. Lifestyle habits include everything from being overweight to stress, medications and smoking. You also want to watch things such as the amount of salt you eat and the amount of potassium in your diet. You can prevent problems through exercise and by maintaining a balance with your meals.

If the lifestyle problems are monitored, and you still have high blood pressure, then medications may also be able to help with the problem. Enzymes, blood pressure blockers and specific medications that are used to monitor and control the flow of blood are all used to lower blood pressure problems and help to move back to a normal state within the body.
