Back pain is a common problem faced by most people .It is estimated that 8 out of 10 individuals possess back pain, mild or severe. There are various reasons for back pain. For proper diagnosis of condition, it is necessary to get a detailed report on symptoms and cause. The major causes for back pain are:
Back Pain From Injuries
It is one of the most common reasons for back pain. Short lived or long-lived pain will develop as a result of spinal injuries or fracture. Sprains or tears in ligaments supporting back muscles and bones can happen due to twisting form normal angle or lifting weights improperly. Such sprains are the common type of injury than due to accidents among people. Vertebral fracture usually happens as a result of accidents or osteoporosis (a condition resulting in weak, brittle and porous bones). Falling from height in some positions can cause back injury.
Mechanical Issues
These are problems developed due to abnormalities in spine movement or how an individual try to move it in certain angles. The most common cause of back pain among common people is a type of mechanical problem, Inter Vertebral Disc Proliferation/Degeneration (IVDP). In human vertebral column, between individual vertebra, there is a disc shaped body that prevents mechanical chocks. In many cases, the disc will get degenerated due to many reasons. Other mechanical causes for pain include spasm, herniated disc and muscle tension.
Infection and tumours: Even though they are not a common issue leading to back pain, infection in vertebral bones like osteomyelitis and discitis can cause back pain. A rare type of tumour affecting vertebrae is also a cause.
Diseases and acquired conditions
The inborn errors in spinal cord and certain diseases like spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
How can you prevent back pain ?
The most effective way to prevent back pain is to strengthen muscles supporting spinal cord. When the muscles get weakened, physical activities giving strain to back region will directly affect spinal cord. This results in back pain. Exercise also helps in keeping body balance that prevents you from slipping and falling.
Preventing obesity is another method to resist back pain. For this you have to follow a healthy diet, devoid of high fat foods. The calories should be controlled to prevent junking. Increase in weight will put pressure on back muscles and bones. |
