Almost all homes have dust mites. They are very tiny insects and are invisible to human eyes. These insects feed on human skin and scalp flakes and are present in pillows, mattress, carpets, bed cover, furniture with upholstery work, cloths, fabrics and fabric covering items and stuffed toys. These micro organisms can thrive in both warm and moist conditions. Asthma can be elicited by body parts and faeces of dust mites with allergic reactions and symptoms. Such particles enter body through inhaled air. Children that are not affected by the condition may show symptoms due to the allergens produced by house dust mites. Those children may not have exhibited such symptoms ever before.
Preventive Measures for House Dust Mites
- Always keep the mattress, pillow, pillow covers and other fabric items dust free and allergens inaccessible. As most of the pillow covers produced by manufacturers are permeable to allergens, it is advised to use covers made up of specialized materials that prevent entry or sticking of such items.
- It is recommended to wash bed and pillow covers once in a week with hot water. Care should be taken while using hot water. A temperature of 500 will be enough to kill dust mites.
- In case of stuffed toys, try to buy washable types. Wash in hot water often and to dry completely.
- Keep off stuffed toys from cushions and bed so that allergens will not come in contact areas with body contact.
- It will be better to maintain humidity between 30-50% in room interiors. Measure humidity using hygrometers that are cheap and locally available.
- Clean the room interiors and stuffed items with wet cleaning items. Avoid using feather cleaners.
